Central to this was the design talk, called ‘Design as Accelerator for Change’, livestreamed on designboom. Moderated by journalist Eva Steidl, Alice Rawsthorn, Design Critic and co-author of Design Emergency, and Holger Hampf, Head of BMW Group Designworks, underscore the transformative power of design in addressing complex social, ecological, and political challenges. They both emphasize the need for interdisciplinary collaboration, user-centric approaches, and the importance of radical thinking.

Spanning the largest area between the front and rear axle is the smooth aluminum casing of the high-voltage battery, which is located low down in the vehicle floor. At the front end, streamlined elements direct the oncoming air past the wheels to prevent adverse turbulence. Airflow along the rear is smoothed by the large rear axle cover and the rear bumper’s diffuser. Overall, the aerodynamics measures for the underbody of the BMW iX account for around 6 miles (WLTP measurement) of its long range. In normal driving situations, both the BMW kidney grille and the air intakes at the bottom of the front bumper are completely sealed off. This default setting allows the air to flow around the vehicle unhindered, significantly reducing aerodynamic drag.

Deconstructivism: Bangle era 2001 – 2010, cars as art, accent on emotion, seeking to surprise

Bayerische Motoren Werke AG, commonly referred to as BMW , is a German multinational company which produces luxury vehicles and motorcycles, producing cars under the brands BMW, Mini and Rolls-Royce, and motorcycles under the brand BMW Motorrad. Conceived as an SAV, this study provides an impressive demonstration of how sporty driving dynamics, a wide spectrum of applications and the pleasure of open-air driving can be reconciled in a single vehicle. Designed as a “frame-structure convertible” with a highly distinctive roof construction, the BMW xActivity combines various components for enhanced driving pleasure, as well as incorporating a host of remarkable details that demonstrate its tremendous functionality. The BMW Concept 1 Series tii ties in with the tradition of compact, light and extremely sporty coupés from BMW, and can be seen as a new interpretation of classic BMW brand values. The BMW Concept 5 Series Gran Turismo melds together elegance, spaciousness and adaptability. The characteristic attributes of a prestigious sedan, a contemporary, highly versatile Sports Activity Vehicle and a classic Gran Turismo have been reinterpreted to produce a thrilling combination, the likes of which have not been seen in any other car.

Cars and the City: a study of the Salone

Four built-in speakers in the rear head restraints complement five midrange and five tweeter speakers. Two central bass speakers and two additional subwoofers located under the rear seat ensure a powerful sound performance. The system’s tweeters are housed behind perforated grilles, while the midrange speakers are hidden beneath the door panels’ fabric trim. Bangle’s designs, often described as “polarizing,” have created a firestorm of controversy. There’s an even more pronounced departure in the rear, where the styling looks like it might have come from one of the major Japanese studios.

The fully active audio system boasts a seven-band equalizer and microphone-assisted sound control based on the vehicle’s dynamic performance and five sound modes. With 30 speakers and an impressive 1,615-watt amplifier output, this advanced system produces an exceptionally clear and wonderfully nuanced sound. Standout features include eight speakers integrated into the front and rear head restraints, two Diamond tweeters, a quartet of 3D speakers, plus two central bass speakers and two subwoofers under the rear seats. In addition to this, the Bowers & Wilkins Surround Sound System also incorporates a 4D Audio function generated using ‘shakers’ in the front seats. Their precise, magnetically controlled vibrations result in intense perception of bass frequencies, even at low volumes.

As he often did, Michael Schimpke was lecturing a group of journalists; the subject, on a beautiful early morning in Malaga, Spain, was the distinctive BMW look. Using one of the several then-new E36 3 Series coupes we were there to test drive as his classroom chalkboard, the Munich public relations manager-turned-professor was in rare form. On June 1, 2012 Karim Habib became the Director of Design at BMW under the company’s vice-president Adrian van Hooydonk. The materials selected and manufacturing processes increase body rigidity and crash safety while keeping weight as low as possible.

Due to the pandemic, the studio has fewer desks than designers, as some work from home, and others come in to collaborate with their colleagues on certain days. The new studio also features a “holodeck,” a large, black conference room with walls made of a massive display and several 4K video cameras. The holodeck enables virtual meetings and collaborations on designs with Munich and Shanghai Design Studios. Following the unveiling of the BMW Vision M NEXT in 2019, domagoj dukec further explores the car’s user-centered design, how it completes the brand’s driving modes alongside the Vision iNEXT, and what it promises to customers for the future of BMW design. Finally, the "Phygital Experience", which fuses the physical and the digital, demonstrates the seamless transition between technology and art. The interactive installation transforms the vehicle model into a dynamic canvas and provides a hands-on experience of how vehicles will interact with humans in an emotionally engaging and personalised manner in the future.

The bond between elegant lightness and powerful dynamism is the defining element of the four-seater CS1 convertible study’s design. A broad shoulderline, curving side sills and imposing wheels clearly announce its performance abilities and sturdiness. The concept study showcases BMW’s vision for a unique vehicle concept that builds on the distinctive design idiom of the BMW X models while training the spotlight firmly on sportiness and an elegant presence. Rather than relying on large clay sculpting and milling machines, the studio now relies on digital tools.

The midrange units in the Bowers & Wilkins Surround Sound System are installed underneath the fabric door panel trim. The tweeters feature brushed stainless-steel grilles with brand logo etching and a discreet lighting effect. From electric drive systems through gull-wing doors to fabric outer skins – the concepts are always focused on the future and brimming with visionary potential. Concept cars serve a variety of purposes, whether they are conceived as design studies, to help develop and implement new technologies, or to visualise what form new production models will take. The standard Harman Kardon Surround Sound System delivers an excellent listening experience with a seven-band equalizer, eighteen speakers, 655 watts of audio power and sound adjustment based on the car’s dynamic performance level.

Meanwhile, Holger Hampf delves into the emotional creative work of both BMW and Designworks, the BMW Group’s design studio, which also works for external clients. This background allows him to emphasize the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration. This mission aims not only to create visually appealing products but also to make them intuitive to use. The Vision vehicles on display at the exhibition are trailblazers for bold, positive change. Design at BMW transcends the mere creation of vehicles; they craft experiences that deeply resonate with users while also addressing complex societal challenges, such as circular mobility.

Instead of conventional buttons, a control surface with active haptic inputs subdivided by feeler bars is used to select the iDrive menus, driving modes and other functions. The controller is designed with a glass-effect finish is surrounded by a Gold Bronze bezel. Nestled between the Start/Stop button and the button for the electromechanical parking brake is a newly devised rocker switch that takes the place of the customary gear selector lever. The instrument panel’s geometry rises up towards the front, turning it into a stage for the futuristic, fully digital screen grouping in the iX.

The BMW i3 – conceived from day one to be a lightweight and fun to drive electric vehicle– provided a future-focused springboard towards sustainable urban mobility. The visionary design of the plug-in hybrid BMW i8 has come to exemplify leading-edge drivetrain technology in the premium sports car segment. The latest version of Bowers & Wilkins’ optional Surround Sound System takes the listening experience to a whole new dimension.

The athletic elegance of the model’s flanks stems from the flowing, classic BMW proportions and elongated silhouette. The design of the BMW Concept Coupé Mille Miglia 2006 is a contemporary interpretation of the legendary BMW 328 Mille Miglia Touring Coupé dating from 1940, and succeeds in contrasting the traditional with the futuristic. The concept car is a tribute to the skill, successes and visions of those motor racing pioneers, as given shape by their modern-day successors.

The whole experience vividly connects you to the raw pleasure of driving, the feeling of speeding along the road, and the emotions encapsulated on your journeys. The BMW Group design team invites visitors to their installation “A Creative's Journey”, timed to coincide with the Salone del Mobile. The idea is to accompany designers on their quest to find creative solutions for tomorrow’s mobility. The installation not only provides insights into BMW Design’s creative process, but also serves as a meeting place, encouraging visitors to pause and linger.

The mostly enclosed surfaces bring about an effective reduction in the air turbulence produced around the wheels. The optional 21-inch and 22-inch Air Performance Wheels help to reduce drag in a very innovative way. These wheels combine optimized aerodynamic properties with the elegance of a V-spoke aluminum wheel.
